On Billable's paid plan, you can now give a friend a free month of Pro: no card, no catch, no charge when it ends. How the gift works and who can claim it.

Most people find the tools they rely on the same way: someone they trust says “I use this, you should try it.” Freelancers are no different. The invoicing app, the time tracker, the bank that doesn’t eat your overseas payments — you probably heard about most of them from another freelancer.

So we’ve made that recommendation worth a bit more. If you’re on Billable’s paid plan, you can now gift a friend a month of Pro, free. They get the whole product for a month, with no card to enter and nothing to cancel.

Paid users get a gift icon in the top bar. Copy your link, send it to a friend, and they get one month of Pro on us — no payment details needed. When the month ends they simply move to the free plan; nothing is charged, deleted or locked. Each code works once, and a fresh one appears as soon as yours is claimed.

How to send one

Look for the gift icon in the top bar, next to your account menu. Open it and you’ll see your code and a copy link button. That’s it — paste the link into a message, an email or a group chat, and send it to whoever you think would get the most out of it.

The code is written in an alphabet with no lookalike characters — no I, L, O, 0 or 1 — so you can read it out on a call without anyone typing the wrong thing.

You don’t need to manage a list of invites. You always have one code on hand. Once a friend claims it, it’s used up, and the next time you open the gift panel there’s a new one waiting for the next person.

What your friend gets

A full month of Pro: unlimited active projects and businesses, invoices, quotes and overdue reminders emailed straight to clients, and documents without the Billable credit on them.

Claiming it is simple:

  • If they’re new to Billable, the link takes them through sign-up. Once their account is set up, the gift is applied automatically — they don’t have to find the code again.
  • If they already have a free account, following the link while signed in applies it straight away. They can also type the code in by hand under Account → Subscription → Have a gift code?

No payment method is asked for at any point. It really is a gift, not a trial with a card on file.

When the month is up

This is the part we were most deliberate about: a gift never turns into a charge. When the month ends, your friend’s account moves back to the free plan on its own. Nothing is deleted, nothing is locked, and there’s no surprise on a card statement, because there was never a card.

If they’ve found Billable useful and want to stay on Pro, they upgrade the normal way, whenever they choose. If not, they carry on with the free plan — free for your first active project, then one flat plan, with no seats, no tiers and no per-user fees.

The fine print, briefly

A few rules keep the gift fair:

  • Gifting is a paid-plan perk. The gift icon only appears while you’re on Pro.
  • Each code works once. Once it’s claimed, it can’t be used again.
  • It’s for people new to Pro. A gift can only be claimed by an account that has never had a Pro subscription or trial — so it’s a way to introduce someone to Billable, not to extend an existing plan.
  • You can’t claim your own code. Sorry.

There’s no reward for the sender and no points to collect. We wanted this to be what it sounds like: a straightforward way to hand a friend something useful.

Frequently asked questions

Does my friend need a credit card to claim a month of Pro?

No. A gifted month of Pro never asks for payment details, either at sign-up or when the code is applied. Your friend gets the full paid plan for a month without entering a card, and because no card is on file, there is nothing to cancel and nothing that can be charged when the month ends.

What happens when the gifted month ends?

The account moves back to the free plan on its own. Nothing is charged, deleted or locked: every invoice, client and project your friend created during the month stays exactly where it is. If they want to keep Pro, they upgrade the normal way whenever they choose; otherwise they simply carry on with the free plan.

Who can claim a Billable gift code?

Any account that has never had a Pro subscription or trial, whether it’s brand new or an existing free account. The gift is meant to introduce someone to Pro, not to extend a plan they already had. Each code works once, and you can’t claim your own, so the link only helps the friend you send it to.

Do I get anything for sending a gift?

No. There are no rewards, credits or points for the sender, and nothing to track. Gifting a month of Pro is simply a perk of the paid plan: a way to hand a friend something useful. Once your code is claimed, a fresh one is waiting in the gift panel for the next person.

Who to send it to

Think of the freelancer who still invoices from a spreadsheet template and waits too long to get paid. The consultant who bills clients in three currencies and loses track of which were paid. The friend who’s just gone solo and hasn’t picked their tools yet. A month is enough time to send real invoices, track real hours and see whether Billable fits how they work.

If you’re on Pro, open the gift icon and send your first one. If you’re not yet, you can still share Billable the old-fashioned way — and when a friend sends you a link, a month of Pro is waiting.
